Flin Firebirds GM Terry Christenson announced Wednesday evening that the Firebirds have acquired goaltender Brendan Johnston from the Windsor Spitfires in exchange for a draft pick.

To Flint:

  • Brendan Johnston

To Windsor:

  • 6th Round Draft Pick (2017)

The acquisition of Johnston is going to fire up rumours surrounding Firebirds starting goaltender and Carolina Hurricanes prospect Alex Nedeljkovic, who is said to be on the trade block and if so, would be the most well recognized goaltender to move this season.

In a confidential release put out to all of the Firebirds staff, GM Terry Christensen specifically explained that the acquisition of Johnston is strictly to provide goaltending depth for when Nedeljkovic leaves to join the American World Junior effort later this month.

Brendan Johnston has spent the beginning of the 2015-2016 season in the GOJHL in Chatham where he posted a goals against average of 3.21 and a save percentage of .910 with the Maroons. Last season in 30 games with the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires, the 1997 born native of Port Lambton, ON posted a 4.71 goals against average and a save percentage of .871.
